Featuring:
FAN OF FRIENDS (Musicians; Philadelphia) &
THOMAS DEVANEY (Poet; Philadelphia)
FAN OF FRIENDS is a quartet that plays folk music with a great deal of respect for the old and new traditions of the genre. Featuring banjo, guitar, violin, and cello, Fan of Friends create dark, somber songs that fuse the gritty urban landscape of the band's Philadelphia home with Appalachian folk and string-quartet classical music. With three of its members alternating between lead vocal duties, the Fan of Friends' songs display a wide diversity while maintaining a sharp consistency.
THOMAS DEVANEY will read from his new book
A Series of Small Boxes(Fish Drum). His Projects with the Institute of Contemporary Art include: "No Silence Here, Enjoy the Silence," for the "Locally Localized Gravity" exhibit (2007); "Tales from the 215" (2006); and "The Empty House" a tour of the Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site for "The Big Nothing" (2004). He earned an MFA in Creative Writing at Brooklyn College where he was a student of Allen Ginsberg. Devaney is currently a Penn Senior Writing Fellow in the English Department at the University of Pennsylvania.
